The sacroiliac (SI) joints that connect the pelvis and spine can become inflamed, causing pain in the lower back, groin, buttocks, abdomen, or legs. Sacroiliac joint injections (SI joint injections) can help alleviate that pain. The steroid medication used in these injections reduces inflammation and soothes irritated nerves.
American Pain Consortium in Indianapolis uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to identify all factors that may be contributing to pain. Depending on the cause of SI joint pain, treatments may include steroid injections, oral medications, and physical therapy exercises to restore strength or correct gait abnormalities.
This outpatient procedure usually takes less than an hour. The injection site is first numbed with a topical medication before a thin needle is inserted into one or both SI joints. The medication’s soothing effects should result in an immediate decrease in pain, but it may take two to three days for the medication to become fully effective.
Patients should avoid driving for the remainder of the day after this procedure but may resume normal activity the following day. Some tenderness at the injection site is normal. People who have diabetes may experience a brief period of elevated blood sugar following a steroid injection.
American Pain Consortium is a full-service pain management practice with offices in Indianapolis, Greenwood, and Lafayette. If you have chronic pain, and previous treatments have failed to alleviate your pain, we may have solutions for you.
